21 Have your say
Did you see what I saw? The new rule in the Indigenous All Stars v NRL All Stars game on Saturday night, when the tackle count restarts for infringements in the play-the-ball?
What a wonderful innovation, and surely it is only a matter of time before the NRL introduces it into the formal rules. We will have a new and faster game called ‘running rugby league’. Bring it on!
One of the real bugs in the game of league is the interference in the play the ball, and this new rule would not just solve that problem, but add a new and exciting dimension to the game. Normally when there is interference and a penalty is given, there is a kick for touch before a tap to restart.
All this slows the game up and is boring for the fans who want to see players running and passing with few stoppages.
If the new rule is introduced, the teams who would benefit the most would be the best-coached teams who make few errors and do not give away easy penalties.
Teams coached by Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy would be expected to take full advantage of any new rule change as both coaches live and breathe discipline.
The other rule introductions last night were 20/40 kicks, which would also be excellent but which we failed to see in action, and the Power Play.
There were four Power Plays, that could be used at any stoppage of play. When taken by the side in possession, it saw the defending side forced to drop two players from the field of play for a period of five minutes or until a try was scored.
Oh well. Two out of three isn’t bad.
Rugby league is a game of 13 on 13, so you attach the Power Play rule to a boomerang, throw it as far as you can, and hope it doesn’t come back.
