No rest for Rasen as Green steps up training regime

COME rain, sleet or snow, it will be business as usual at Market Rasen Louth Rugby Club.

The Red and Greens, who are in their first year at Midlands One East level, saw last Saturday’s league meeting away at Ilkeston ruled out due to the weather.

While continued freezing conditions could put Saturday’s home clash against Peterborough in doubt, head coach Simon Green is adamant that normal service should be maintained with regard to training and preparation.

Green is hoping to get the squad together this evening, but if conditions rule out training outside, the players will move indoors to the gym.

“I think it is imperative that we get together at some point and we will for sure,” said the head coach.

“Last year we had a prolonged period of ice and snow and we were training in the gym with Rob Rigby.

“He has moved away now, but we do have personal trainer Paul Cook who advises us and helps when we do have to revert to gym work.

“It is important that we do something as a group, and we may do a ‘chalk and talk’ session. This means we will get together and look at some videos of matches.

“These sessions are always useful at this time of year to see if we are developing in the way we want to develop.

“Our primary objective for this season was to make sure we are safe so that we can stay at this level.

“I think we are probably two more wins away from ensuring our safety.

“We always thought that if we were to reach the high 40s that would be enough to make us safe.”

Weather permitting, Market Rasen get their next chance for a victory on Saturday, when Peterborough come to the Willingham Road ground.

The Cambridgeshire side earned a 26-7 victory over Market Rasen back in September last year, but Green is hoping that the Rasen side has now fully adapted to life at this level and will turn the tables on their visitors.

“Peterborough have a good set-up,” said Green. “They have come down from the level above so they have more experience at the higher level than we do, but they are playing like a mid-table team at the moment and I think it will be a close game.

“They have two or three key players that we know about, so we work on closing them down in order to reduce Peterborough’s options a little bit.

“It will be tough, we expect a very tight game, but at the same time we understand the importance of winning your home matches.

“Our guys are playing well. They are developing all the time and they are playing much better rugby than we were at the start of the season.”

Meanwhile, in Midlands Three East (North), Lincoln are set to welcome Mellish, while Sleaford travel
