Liam Messam: Struggling with a calf injury
Chiefs flanker Liam Messam is battling to overcome a calf injury which could rule him out of the start of the Super Rugby tournament.
Messam suffered the injury while warming-up for the Chiefs’ first pre-season match against the Rebels in Geelong on Friday.
The All Black picked up the injury when he took off for a sprint and did not take part in the match which the Chiefs won 36-0.
The injury means Messam could miss the Chiefs’ remaining two pre-season fixtures as well as their opening Super Rugby match against the Highlanders at Waikato Stadium on February 25.
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said it’s still too early to speculate on the length of Messam’s lay-off.
“We’re not sure how bad that is, we’ll know in the next couple of days,” Rennie told Fairfax Media.
“But he’s walking, so with a bit of luck it might only be a couple of weeks, but we’ll see how that goes,” he added.
