Bradley Davies has received a seven-week suspension for his off the ball “tackle” on Donnacha Ryan during Ireland’s RBS 6 Nations defeat to Wales on Sunday.

The incident, for which the Wales second row was yellow carded by referee Wayne Barnes on the advice of linesman Dave Pearson, was adjudicated on today by an independent championship disciplinary committee in London today.

Davies inverted Ryan and dropped him on the ground. The punishment is slightly above the mid-point on the scale under rule 10.4 (j).

Ireland went on the lose the game 21-23 with Leigh Halfpenny landing a last-minute penalty, also awarded for a “tip” tackle for which Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris was also yellow carded.

Referees and officials were advised to clamp down on “tip” and “spear” tackles in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup.

A decision in the case of Ferris, who was also cited for the less serious incident in the final minute of the game, is expected shortly.
